Embracing God's Design
In the busyness and distractions of our modern world, don't overlook the importance of coming together for family meals. It's not just a simple meal, but an act of worship, strengthening our connections, principles, and faith by gathering in God's grace and embracing His abundant blessings.
Strengthening Family Bonds: United in His Love
Drawing from Psalms, we're reminded of the beauty of family unity: "Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!" (Psalm 133:1, ESV).
Family supper stands as a testament to this unity, a sacred space where hearts are knit together in His love. Even the research from the University of Illinois, reveals God's design in the findings that, families who dine together regularly experience stronger communication and deeper relationships.
Nurturing Open Dialogue: His Comfort in Trials
Encouraged by Galatians, embrace the ethos of bearing one another's burdens: "Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ" (Galatians 6:2, ESV).
Family supper offers a sanctuary for honest conversation, a holy ground where struggles are shared and comfort is found in His presence. Again, researchers from Brigham Young University, found that adhering to God's design for families, adolescents who share regular family dinners exhibit higher levels of emotional well-being and resilience, anchored in His unwavering love.
Exemplifying Virtue: His Light in the Darkness
As parents, we are called to be examples of virtue and righteousness for our children. The apostle Paul admonishes us to "set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity" (1 Timothy 4:12, NIV).
By demonstrating positive behaviours such as kindness, respect, and gratitude during family supper, we instill these values in our children and shape their character for the future.
Gratitude and Worship: His Abundant Provision
In the Gospel of Luke, we witness Jesus giving thanks before breaking bread, acknowledging the abundance of His provision: "And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them" (Luke 22:19, ESV).
Family supper becomes a sacred offering of thanksgiving and worship, a holy communion where His presence is felt in every bite. By having family meals together, we set aside a sacred time to worship together as a family and build the foundation for a Christ-centered home. Through prayers of gratitude at family meals, we magnify His name, declaring His goodness and faithfulness for all to see.
Cultivating Healthy Habits: Honoring His Temple
Recognizing our bodies as temples of the Holy Spirit, we honour His dwelling within us: "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own" (1 Corinthians 6:19, ESV).
Family supper becomes a sacred ritual of stewardship, an opportunity to worship our Lord by nourishing our bodies with wholesome foods. In honouring His temple, we embrace His promise of abundant life, flourishing in body, mind, and spirit. His wisdom is again revealed, in studies that identify the benefits of shared family meals, such as children who partake in regular family meals, adopt healthier dietary patterns, and reduce the risk of obesity and chronic illness.
Answering His Call to Supper
As we heed the call to gather for the family supper, let us come into the presence of the Lord with open hearts and willing spirits. In the grace of God, we find not just sustenance for our bodies but nourishment for our souls, forging bonds that transcend time and trials. Let us gather in His name, embrace the sacred tradition of family supper, and partake of His abundant blessings.
